Foursquare is a location-based social networking website based on hardware for mobile devices. The service is available to users with GPS-enabled mobile devices such as smartphones. Users "check-in" at venues using a mobile website, text messaging or a device-specific application by running the application and selecting from a list of venues that the application locates nearby.[3] Each check-in awards the user points and sometimes "badges".
The service was created in 2009 by Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai. Crowley had previously founded the similar project Dodgeball as his graduate thesis project in the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at New York University. Google bought Dodgeball in 2005 and shut it down in 2009, replacing it with Google Latitude. Dodgeball user interactions were based on SMS technology, rather than an application.[4]
Foursquare is the second iteration of the same idea, that people can use mobile devices to interact with their environment. As of June 2011, the company reported it had 10 million registered users.[5] The company was expected to pass 750 million check-ins before the end of June 2011, with an average of about 3 million check-ins per day. 50 percent of users come from outside US and also 50 percent of users are male.[6]

Foursquare updates Android app as Samsung GalaxyTab Heads to the UK.
Samsung Galaxy, the manufacturer’s Android tablet, will be hitting UK stores in November, taking sales across the pond. The 7-inch tablet runs Android 2.2 Froyo, powered by a Cortex A8 1 GHz processor, and will be available through a number of varying priced packages in the UK market.
Popular check-in tool Foursquare has updated its Android app to sport a cleaner interface, with a new To-Do tab in the main navigation bar. Friend information and requests have also been added to improve the Foursquare Android app. This follows a recently updated iPhone app for the location-based behemoth.Samsung Galaxy expands across the planet
The UK launch comes weeks after the GalaxyTab launched in the U.S., keeping aligned with global market release dates. The support for Android devices only strengthens Google’s efforts, particularly as the holiday season approaches.Android gets popular this holiday season
Determining expected sales around the plethora of smartphones and tablets this holiday season will be no easy task, but ChangeWave offers some insight. Looking at consumer responses to Android over time, the ChangeWave survey notes a rising interest in Android devices, after a dip during June when the iPhone 4 was released.
The survey went on to anticipate consumer behavior over the next 90 days, with 37% of the 4,000 respondents preferring an Android OS over Apple for any smart phone purchases they may make. That’s a 7-point increase for Android, compared to ChangeWave’s last survey.
